SUMMARY: This is a review on how climate change can affect agriculture. The first six sections talk about changes in crop production, plants adapting to heat and drought, metabolic changes in plants due to increases in CO2, changes in plant physiology and hormones. The last section talks about ways we can change our crops including: different ways to grow crops as well as genetic engineering and gene editing.
LESSON COMMENTS: Excerpts and sections from this review would be very useful when covering agriculture in an environmental science class. The last section on genes and gene editing can be used to connect a genetics chapter in biology class to real life application. Students will have a better understanding of why certain laboratory methods (such as PCR) are used and their focus can be on the big picture of using these tools to help combat the effects of climate change.
